Recruited as part of the executive team to build the fully insured business line for IHC, a New York Stock Exchange publicly traded company. Began as Chief Health Actuary, led a team of 25, performed valuation and product development activity for a diversified product line, responsible for underwriting performance. Became President of the Fully Insured Division, led a division of over 300 people within six operating companies, responsible for portfolio top and bottom lines and operating company results.

  • Improved underwriting performance for four consecutive years, 2009 through 2012, achieving 7% margin on $240 million in premium.
  • Product lines consisting of small group and individual medical, short term medical, student medical, limited medical, dental, vision, and ancillary products.
  • 60 percent of the business marketed and administered in-house, the balance through outside third party administrators and independent marketing organizations.
  • Integral part of the executive team that identified and acquired nine operating companies.
  • Principal architect of the tactical and strategic planning and response to ACA legislation and regulation.
  • Managed an operating budget of $35 million, improved underwriting performance to five year highs, while increasing organic sales by 40%.
  • Successfully communicated IHC strategies, tactics, and results to shareholders, board members, and A. M. Best, helping to maintain high industry ratings for IHC carriers.

Erickson founded this innovative actuarial consulting firm in 1996, emphasizing in insurance program management in concert with long term, partnership-based clients. He continued to manage the operation and client base concurrent with assuming IHC duties.

AMC became the industry standard for active actuarial and consultative insurance program management, particularly known for turning problem blocks of business into successes, and lauded for producing monthly comprehensive and innovative analysis.

Institutionalized into AMC four tenets of actuarial program management:

  • Specialize in insurance program management – sought long term arrangements.
  • Produce custom work only – specifically manufactured with the client’s own data.
  • Physically travel to clients to gain understanding – no ivory tower actuaries.
  • Align incentives with clients – fees based on growth, profit, or other objectives.

The 2007 footprint, when AMC was sold to IHC:

  • 25 employees.
  • Four offices in four states.
  • Revenue of over $4 million.
  • $450 million of premium subject to actuarial management.
